University and Careers Counseling
Whether a ZIS student is planning to go to university, a gap year, military service or pursue other options, the Upper School University and Careers Counselors provide each student assistance in that transition.
98% of ZIS graduates go on to attend a three or four year university degree course, and the University and Careers Counselors work to guide both students and parents through the application process. For example, in addition to the Careers and University Handbook, the school's weekly electronic newsletter includes a Counselors’ Update giving information to parents. Naviance Family Connection is another important tool. Naviance Family Connection is our information management system that links counselors, students, and parents, and allows students to research, plan, and track university applications. We also offer parent workshops on a variety of topics.
ZIS is a truly international school, with students preparing for opportunities around the world. ZIS’s reputation as a leading school has been shown by the number of universities that visit our campus each year. Such interest from universities is a sign that ZIS graduates are highly regarded. An overview of our counseling program for each grade is included below. Please see our school profile for a list of previous university acceptances.

ZIS University and Careers Counselors believe Grade 9 students should concentrate on transitioning to Upper School, challenging themselves academically, and joining an extra-curricular activity or two. Our focus for Grade 9 students is getting to know themselves as learners. This will ensure a range of options for them in the future. The University and Careers Counselors work with the Grade 9 Grade Level Leader to introduce Naviance Family Connection as an important tool.
Our work with Grade 10 students focuses on exploring their interests and abilities and matching them with future plans. This is mostly done through the Grade Level Leader and grade level meetings. We facilitate careers interest inventories in Naviance Family Connection prior to our annual Career Forum in order to match aptitude and interest to possible career paths. The University and Careers Counselors also coordinate university representative visits, and advise on standardized testing. The Counselors play a large role in meetings about the academic pathways available at ZIS and are present in most individual subject selection meetings.
We believe Grade 11 students should focus on academics and honestly self-evaluate their strengths and weaknesses with regards to their aspirations. The Counselors visit grade level meetings in the first semester and then meet students individually in the second semester. Grade 11 students are also scheduled into a regular counseling block during in the second semester. The University and Careers Counselors organize meetings with university representatives and students, and work regularly with students to research and generate a list of prospective universities. The counselors also advise on appropriate standardized testing schedules and advise students of the test preparation options available. The drafting of application essays/statements begins late in the year and the University and Careers Counselors run workshops on personal statements / essays, resumes and interviews. Naviance Family Connection becomes a very important tool during this year.
Grade 12 is the time for applications. The goal is for students to be true to themselves and show their individuality and character, making them likely candidates for admission to university. Depending on the country and the course, applications can be due as early as October of the Grade 12 year or as late as the months after graduation. Students should ensure they are well prepared and aware of deadlines published by the University and Careers Counselors.
We regularly speak at grade level meetings and offer workshops, and Grade 12 students are also scheduled into a regular counseling block during in the first semester. This is where the information on completing applications, writing statements/essays, collecting predicted grades and replying to acceptance offers will be given. We also advise students on the different testing options available and provide information on workshops about resumes, letters and interviews.
Parents should be aware that universities are in contact with the applicant, not the school, the counselor, or the parent. Therefore, regular and open communication is necessary for a smooth process. Naviance Family Connection is a powerful tool in this communication process.
Naviance Family Connection, is a website that students and parents can use to help in making decisions about courses, universities, and careers. The web address for our ZIS Naviance Family Connection account is:
Family Connection is an integral part of the College Guidance program at ZIS. Here are some of the things we use this program for:
- Getting organized in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete on-line personality and career interest surveys, manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about university and careers, and even keep track of homework and upcoming tests.
- Researching universities – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied to universities in the past. There is also a wealth of information about North American universities.
- Coordinating college visits – Find out which colleges are visiting our school and attend those sessions
- Test prep – Naviance Family Connection provides SAT and ACT prep. These portals provide individualized study plans for students to complete at their convenience.
- Information Collection – Family Connection also allows us share information with you and your student, and we use the document library to upload resources we have prepared for students. Naviance Family Connection is also where we place journal entries to keep records of our meetings.
