Fitness Course Details

Pilates

Improve your physical strength, flexibility and posture, and enhance mental awareness.

Pilates is a mind-body fitness program that incorporates breathing and movement to achieve a balanced muscular system and increased body awareness.

Pilates exercises develop the core ie trunk strength, stability and flexibility. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, as the are trained to do in Pilates, they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement.

Pilates exercises can be adjusted to suit all levels of fitness.

Taught by Tiina Aarnio, Deep-Stretching and Pilates Instructor, Physiotherapist, MSc Health Sciences.

How to dress:
Wear comfortable clothes that stretch and do not restrict your movements, preferably not too baggy or loose. Socks and a sweatshirt are optional. If you have an exercise or camping mat, bring that along too.

Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking is a form of physical activity, where regular, natural walking is enhanced by the addition of the active use of a pair of Nordic Walking Poles. It is a safe, natural, dynamic, efficient and suitable-for-all form of physcial activity that trains the body in a holistic, symmetrical and balanced way.

The overall goal of Nordic Walking is a general physical and mental well being.

The technique and teaching of Nordic Walking are based on three main pillars:

  • Correct walking technique
  • Correct posture
  • Correct use of poles

The course will focus on the development of technique which engages all muscle systems and the correct use of Nordic Walking Poles. Over the duration of the course you will develop and increase your stamina and there will be a diverse range of walking courses used to progress your fitness and technique. The course is suitable for all levels of fitness.

Taught by Tiina Aarnio, Deep-Stretching and Pilates Instructor, Physiotherapist, MSc Health Sciences.

The course will take place in the forests and outdoors area around the Lower School in Wädenswil.

Equipment: For this course you will need a pair of Nordic Walking Poles. Information about Nordic Walking Poles is available here.

Core Strengthening

 

A major objective of the core training and strengthening is to exercise the abdominal, back and inner thighs muscles in unison, complied with focused breathing patterns. The course will focus on enhancing stability, strength and endurance. This core training course aims to improve posture and dynamic balance and extend the flexibility which is often required during physical activity and is important in everyday activities. In addition, it helps to lose the weight. 

The exercises in this course are designed to challenge the core and include crunches, plank, and leg pull down, back extension exercises to enhance other physical activities like running or swimming.

Course is taught by Personal Fitness Trainer, Tatiana Lorinczova.

Tae Bo

Tae Bo is a combination of martial arts and boxing with some dance moves mixed in. The workout promises to tone the body while giving a good cardiovascular workout. It is designed to burn fat, help with losing weight and teach some self-defense techniques.

It  includes in its title"Tae" -- meaning foot or leg -- to represent kicking and lower body movements, and "Bo" -- short for boxing -- to represent the upper body striking and defense. Tae Bo not only works on the upper body (arms, chest, shoulders) and lower body (thighs, buns), but the core muscles (abs, spinal erectors, obliques) too. It improves the condition, endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination and the functional strength.

Arts & Crafts Courses

Painting

Open to anyone interested in improving their Painting skills (figurative or abstract) and suitable for the novice and more experienced. There will be help finding ideas to get started if necessary, or the opportunity to work on one’s own projects. As well individual advice, there will be group discussion/critiques, using any painting medium, such as oil, acrylic, gouache and/or watercolor.

Materials, such as canvas etc. are not provided and must be purchased at extra cost. Taught by Paul Smith, Upper School art teacher.
