Middle School Curriculum
Program Overview
Middle School students have a balanced, developmentally-appropriate and comprehensive program with a schedule of eight classes.
The following six subjects are compulsory:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
- Health and Physical Education
- German
Grade 6 Electives
For the remaining courses, Grade 6 students choose two of the following electives per semester:
- Band (year-long)
- String Ensemble (year-long)
- Choir
- Art
- Drama
- Technology
- French or Spanish
Grade 7 Electives
For the remaining courses, Grade 7 students choose two of the following electives per semester:
- Band (year-long)
- String Ensemble (year-long)

- Digital Journalism
- Design Technology
- Digital Art
- French or Spanish
- Virtual Middle School online courses
Grade 8 Electives
For the remaining courses, Grade 8 students choose two of the following electives per semester:

Co-Curricular Program
ZIS offers a broad range of co-curricular activities, from arts to sports, from debating to service learning, to complement your child's academic development.
Exploring is a vital part of growing and we will encourage students to try new things—and with so many options, it's a great opportunity to improve your skills, make new friends and find new interests!
English as an Additional Language
Students who need support to develop their English language skills may have English as an Additional Language (EAL) and students with special learning needs may have Learning Support in place of one of their electives.

- Short-term literacy interventions
- Mathematics lab
- Executive skills coaching
- Speech and language therapy
- Counselling services
