Middle School Projects

Development of Outdoor Education, Living Classrooms and Service Learning Curriculum

Project Cost: CHF 20,000

Eco-literacy in Middle School is essential to educating our students for sustainability. Teachers and students will have opportunities to engage in Citizen Science Projects that produce excellent science while at the same time providing quality open data to help citizens, communities and governments assess and monitor the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), design and create living classrooms, and participate in local service learning.

By creating living ecosystems as classrooms, our students don't just learn about nature but will have opportunities to learn from nature. For example, Middle School grades will work with experts to plan a vertical garden to be implemented next school year.

STEAM, SDGs and Real World Problem Solving

Project Cost: CHF 6,000

Building on our work from last year's Annual Fund STEAM focus, we want to create opportunities for students to engage in real-world problem solving using STEAM design and engineering practices - for example designing sustainable cities with myclimate Switzerland. Projects will include work with professionals in upcycling, renewable energy, and “biomimicry to design” as a part of efforts toward the U.N. SDGs.

Fund for student-led SDG projects

Project cost: CHF 5,000

This "venture fund" will provide support for students who are passionate about pursuing their own Sustainability projects outside of the classroom. The fund may allow the purchase of special equipment, software or learning tools to make these student-led projects possible. Criteria for successful grants will be created by faculty in consultation with students.

Eco-Schools participation

Project cost: CHF 1,500

Eco-Schools “encourages young people to engage in their environment by allowing them the opportunity to actively protect it. Through this program, young people experience a sense of achievement at being able to have a say in the environmental management policies of their schools, ultimately steering them towards certification and the prestige which comes with being awarded a Green Flag.” Extracurricular clubs in the Lower and Middle Schools will take part in the Eco-Schools program and in certifying their campuses under the Eco-Schools framework.
