Life at the Upper School

School day:
Students from a vast range of different cultures, mostly aged between 15 and 18, generally start their day at 08:50 and finish at 15:45 except for Wednesday when classes end at 14.45. Some IB HL and AP classes start at 08:25. Outside the classroom, they can choose from a variety of sports, music, and other activities happening daily and changing every semester.

Students have a set of standard classes and also two electives they may choose. Ultimately you can graduate from ZIS with an:

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Advanced Placement courses
  • General Diploma

Every year, different service clubs and groups make a difference within the community and around the world by raising awareness for an issue they feel passionate about. Visit the activities section to read more about these Service Learning opportunities.

Field trips and Classroom Without Walls:
Besides frequent class-specific field trips, at the end of each year every student participates in Classroom Without Walls trips, for example: working with Habitat for Humanity to finish a family’s house in Portugal, kayaking down the Soča river in Slovenia, or taking cooking classes in London.

ZIS has many sports teams and clubs, including soccer, rugby, swimming, volleyball, tennis, climbing, softball, track etc. (check the link for a complete list). We have our own triple gym, full-size grass field, tennis court, fitness room / workout gym.

The Arts:
The school stages two drama productions every year - students can be involved as cast, crew, or in the pit orchestra. We also have an active Jazz Band, String Ensemble, Wind Band, choir, and a capella singing group. Our Music Academy offers lessons and performance opportunities. Visual Arts are part of the curriculum and include several after-school art shows.

Visit Student Life to have a closer look at all the Music, Arts, Activities and Sports opportunities at our school.Inside the classroom, you can normally choose from two electives each year aside from a set of standard classes, and you can ultimately graduate from ZIS with a General Diploma, International Baccalaureate Diploma or with Advanced Placement courses.
